The focus of this index is on women in experimental/avant garde music: contemporary classical/post-classic composition, free improvisation and avant jazz, electronic/ electroacoustic music, sound art, sound installations, radio art, sound poetry, etc. A few of these artists may also work within relatively mainstream forms, but they are included here because of their other work that is more challenging (example: Yoko Ono)

Hello dear reader; good to see you here! I’m KN and on my way to the house of Betty Koster for an interview. In case you have been hiding away under a gravestone; Betty Koster is the music producer fairly known for her work under the Phantasm Nocturnes (and PN-lobit) moniker. Her music is pretty special and in general pretty damn spooky too! I’ve always wanted to meet her, so recently I just asked if she would be up for an interview. She agreed and now I’m on my way to her home.. How exciting and glad you can come along, as I’m probably too excited to pull this one off all on my own.
Luckily it’s been a wonderful day weather wise, maybe she has a garden to sit and sunbathe for a bit.. We are close now.. A nice and posh looking neighborhood..

Not very long ago we featured the new ‘Chris Cunningham’ of the next generation Jan Strach, but it’s only fair that there should be a female counter part to claim this precious throne of video art. Without all too much extravaganza I would like to inform you that our team of reporters and researchers did find the female ‘Cunningham’ of our next generation. Strangely this creative video artist had been sitting right under our noses, camouflaged as an experimental sound musician. Let’s give you a hint; it’s furry and has feathers?

ARTICLE REBLOG – Ritual, Noise, and the Cut-up: The Art of Tara Transitory
I first came across the artist Tara Transitory aka One Man Nation when I put together a season on African and Asian Electronic artists, so I have been looking forward to reading this article ( also recommend the series ). Just as an aside – I posted the article on the Feminatronic Facebook page and it has had a very positive response.
Marginalized bodies produce marginalized sounds to communicate things that escape language. The queer body is the site of sounds that engage pleasure, repression, rage, isolation, always somehow outside of dominant language. Sound Studies tells us that we should trust our ears as much as our eyes, justifying our trust in sound, and of the resonating body. Affect Theory goes further, saying that all senses play into a body that processes input through levels of response, experience, and anticipation. Affect is the vibrational space that is both bodily memory and anticipation. So where do sound and affect meet in queer bodies? How do marginalized peoples use sound and the body to express liberation, objectification, joy, and struggle?

The album art for p0stm0dern p0stm0rtem is an image of the artist wearing a pair of comically oversized shades. It is, otherwise and even in that regard completely detached from any symbolic reference that I could deduce to the album in question. If you’re asking, what could it all mean?.. nada. No, I am fully convinced that there is not a shred of tangible evidence here to suggest that this image has any conceptual relevance to… wait… upon closer inspection, I’ve discovered that the sunglasses are a faint yellow color and that a screen of some kind is being reflected, mirrored by the surface of the glasses, and the image is all pixelated, and… yeah, I guess I’ve still got nothing.
