NEWS UPDATE – SYRPHE – TODAYS DISCOVERY – FAR EAST ASIAN ELECTRONIC ARTISTS

SYRPHE has a new website with articles, gig lists and this piece –

Feminism in electronic and experimental music, the failure of most Westerners.

syrphe

Interesting perspective here and a wonderful insight into what artists are creating in other parts of the World, namely Africa and Asia. I have cited Syrphe on many occasions as a site that tirelessly promotes the creativity of artists in the electronic and experimental fields and the original playlists that I had on 8Tracks were based on the discoveries that I came across via Syrphe. The 8Track playlists I am in the middle of replicating on SoundCloud but this exhaustive list will add to the roster of artists I have linked with from not only Africa and Asia but also South America.
Finally, I recommend you read this article and discover for yourself. It’s great that there is an index of many of the under represented artists as well as the more known.

Here is a recommendation from last year but it still stands –

Todays recommendation from the Syrphe label is this wonderful sampler of  Far East Asian  experimental electronic artists and I shall be discovering more in the coming season but in the meantime –

Dee Byrne composes for and leads ‘space-jazz’ group Entropi (debut album, New Era was released on the F-IRE Presents label in June 2015), is one half of experimental electronics/sound art duo Deemer (debut album, Interference Patterns was released on Luminous Label in December 2015), is involved in numerous collaborations including six piece improvising electro-acoustic ensemble Zonica, eight piece saxophone ensemble Saxoctopus (debut album released on Raw Tonk Records in July 2015) and Word of Moth (debut album to be released on Luminous label in 2016). Dee also plays with Xantone Blacq (Platinum Fingers/Whirlwind) and the Soul Immigrants (P-Vine records Japan). Deemer employ, among other things, alto saxophone, drums, analogue electronics, tape, transducer microphones/speakers to instantly compose, activate space, and blur the boundaries between free jazz and sound installation.

SOUNDCLOUD SPOTLIGHT – Alma Laprida

ALMA LAPRIDA

TODAYS DISCOVERY – Hyaena Fierling

Hyaena Fierling

Develops work in the field of sound action since 1999 as composer and investigator in the field of sound structuring; dedicates herself to experimental/improvised music since 1996.

Her work is based on improvisation and exploration, involving the capture of sounds and soundscapes (field work) as well as programming and editing (based on the canons of film sound) of sound sequences originated from unorthodox sound sources – wood and metal objects, stones, different instruments (prepared bass guitar, Hexluth – electrified luth, Moog and Micro Korg synths) or the exploration of sound possibilities in spaces with uncanny acoustic characteristics – the same sound sequences at a later time edited and sequence according to soundtrack assemblage composition, breaking the borders of experimental sound and music in cinematic space.

REVIEW REBLOG – Eli Gras (a amazing multidisciplinary artist, performer, inventor, entertainer, musician…)

The creativity and pure inventiveness of Eli Gras :)) An artist well worth watching all the videos and checking out more. Courtesy to Yeah I Know it Sucks for this overview.

Yeah I Know It Sucks

Eli Gras is a multidisciplinary artist active in lots of creative fields, but mostly known for her excellent career in experimental underground music since the early eighties. Her experimentations have covered all kinds of musical paths, from pure experimentalism to electropop, minimalism, funk, and so much more. What is striking to me from this artist is that she invents her own instruments, which of course brings a completely new and unique sound perspective to the ears and minds.

There are lots of videos of her live performances playing her inventions, which of course is an exciting thing to see and hear on the digital highway; but its even better and more exciting when you can hear and see her performing live in front of you. In a couple of days (upcoming Saturday 14th November) she will be doing her magical thing on the experimental cozy toxic grounds of Gifgrond.

REVIEW REBLOG – Notes On… ‘Art Angels’ by Grimes

Here is review number two courtesy of Notes on Sounds…

NOTES, ON SOUNDS....

Grimes_-_Art_AngelsWhen you get bored of me I’ll be back on the shelf” sings Claire Boucher on one of her poppiest and catchiest tunes to date, ‘California.’ Luckily for her, Grimes isn’t likely to be put on to the shelf anytime soon. Her fourth LP Art Angels has been three years in the making, and halfway through that process she claimed to have thrown out a whole album’s worth of material for it not being good enough. More recently, she said that she found her older works “embarrassing.” Apparently she found listening to the likes of ‘Oblivion’ cringe worthy.

That must have left fans of Boucher’s a bit worried. Her last, breakthrough album Visions was a sometimes abrasive but often intelligent dive into harsher electronic, analogue territory, moving on from the double-whammy of synth-experiments Halfaxa and Geidi Primes in 2010 and her collaborative LP with d’Eon, Darkbloom. WEB FOCUS – Many Many Women – About

Here is a fantastic index of innovative composers, improvisers, and sonic artists which if you fulfil the criteria as an artist you can request to be added. Follow the About link –

The focus of this index is on women in experimental/avant garde music: contemporary classical/post-classic composition, free improvisation and avant jazz, electronic/ electroacoustic music, sound art, sound installations, radio art, sound poetry, etc. A few of these artists may also work within relatively mainstream forms, but they are included here because of their other work that is more challenging (example: Yoko Ono)
