A CLOSER LISTEN is honored to present the online premiere of Tamara Filyavich’s return fire.

Tamara Filyavich presents return fire, a soundscape of analogue synthesizer, radio transmission and digital manipulation channeling the events of the Ukrainian revolution of 2013-2014. Filyavich has lived in Montreal for the past 20 years, after she and her family left the town on Yalta in the occupied Ukraine.  return fire is a reflection on childhood memories filtered through contemporary political struggles for social justice and free expression on the streets. This piece also includes variations on the Ukrainian choral piece “Plyve Kacha,” an  old Ukrainian folk song which was given new meaning after being played on Kiev’s central square during the funeral for slain opposition fighters in 2014.

Document3SO! Amplifies. . .a highly-curated, rolling mini-post series by which we editors hip you to cultural makers and organizations doing work we really really dig.  You’re welcome!

The first annual Sounding Board sound exhibit was held at The Companion Gallery in Austin, Texas on December 3 – 6, 2015, as part of the 60th anniversary meeting of the Society of Ethnomusicology (SEM). In the promotional literature for the show, the curator, Leonardo Cardoso (Texas A&M), described its objective: to give students, ethnographers, ethnomusicologists, and any “sound-minded” people an opportunity to share research and contemplate fieldwork from different perspectives. Cardoso hoped that SEMSoundingBoard would “stimulate dialogue between ethnomusicology and other fields, especially sound studies, sound art, ecomusicology, anthropology, and media studies.” He also sought to facilitate interaction between the local community in Austin and SEM scholars who traveled to attend the conference.

Off for a lie down…

Here is this years Christmas playlist and in typical Feminatronic fashion it’s not your usual Christmas list but sonically sounds like Christmas to me ( not sure what that says about me but hey ho : D).
Artists on this list are –
A Robin, Matana Roberts, Saira Raza , Sara Bigdeli Shamloo,Granit, Yullippe, Christina Vantzou, Sophie Cooper, Anda Volley and The Bug ft Liz Harris.

I might not be around much this holiday, so I just wanted to send a huge thank you to everyone who has liked, followed and commented on Feminatronic this past year, whatever platform you use.

I would also like to thank the Websites and Reviewers who have graciously let me plunder their writing expertise to bring News, Reviews, Interviews and New Discoveries.

You’re not supporting me personally, as such but the many creative women out there making music, sounds and noises using a multitude of electronic methods.

Finally, have a very Happy Christmas and a Peaceful New Year and hope you will stick with me for another year of discovery in 2016.

Best Wishes

Feminatonic

SOUNDCLOUD PLAYLISTS

Feminatronic is on Soundcloud, linking with as many artists from around the world, creating electronic music from as many genres as possible. Every Monday, I put together a playlist of usually 8 tracks, around a general theme and this week the focus is on Duo’s. Whatever your musical interests, there’s bound to be something  waiting to be discovered.

TODAYS DISCOVERY – Sara Bigdeli Shamloo

Sara Bigdeli

I know very little about Sara Bigdeli  Shamloo and I can’t recall how I came across her music but I’m glad I did. What I do know is that she is a  Iranian vocalist / songwriter / composer and much of her work is in the theatre (correct me if I’m wrong). She is also a member of 2 bands – 9T Antiope and Migrain,  the latter I have been listening to recently.

TODAYS DISCOVERY -Diane Thome

There was a bit of a buzz on Twitter today about a list compiled on RYM website covering women in electroacoustic, minimalism, tape music, musique concrète, free improvisation, and related genres  which I highly recommend.

This is a brilliant work in progress and although there are many artists I know there are many that I do not. Never missing a chance to discover new music I began to look through and just followed the links.

In doing so, I came across Todays Discovery – Diane Thome.

Here is a wonderful collaboration she did with Robert Austin. He states on the Soundcloud page –

This is a collaboration with my longtime collaborator, Seattle composer Diane Thome. I designed sounds for her (usually hundreds), from which she selected a subset, and arranged the samples into an audio collage, typically 8-16 tracks. I would then nip, tuck, re-synthesize, adjust dynamics and panning etc. We would pass it back and forth until we both agreed that it was ‘done’. I would sometimes write sections for pieces myself, and the goal was to produce a computer-synthesized tape which could stand on its own, though typically a solo instrument would play together with the tape. “Estuaries” was scored for oboe and computer synthesized sound, and here is the latter.
