MIRA CALIX (1970 – 2022)

“…she pushed the boundaries between electronic music, classical music and art in a truly unique way.” – Warp Records

Mira Calix in an interview with Dr Tara Rodgers in Pink Noises

I am absolutely beside myself to hear of the death of Mira Calix.
She was one of the rare artists who supported my little venture through the years and for that long distance online connection, I am grateful. Thoughts go out to her family and friends.❤

and finally…

Constance Demby – http://www.constancedemby.com/

It’s with sadness that I write that one of my long term heroines has died. Constance Demby was an important pioneer of electronic New Age and Spacemusic, a composer, multi instrumentalist and instrument builder.

Around the world in 8tracks

Eclectic Electronic Soundscapes

In March 2020, TQ zine ( tqzine.blogspot.com/ ) put out a call for music related things for an upcoming special edition in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. I thought it might be a good chance to get the word out there to a wider audience that there are many female identifying artists creating ” left field, NAU – No Audience Underground “music. To be honest, some of us have had no audience at all and is one of the original reasons why I began Feminatronic 8 years ago.

That aside, I decided to take one of the playlist themes I use here and create an 8Track list with links to tracks and artists based on my then recent listening, from some of the Covid -19 hit countries around the world. Of course, we all know that now in September 2020, this list could be so much larger and would probably include everyone I follow here. In lieu of that here’s the link to who I am following on Soundcloud, which I add to regularly – https://soundcloud.com/feminatronic/following

As with all the playlists there are no preferences. They are jumping off points to discoveries. They are not meant to be definitive. Just let some of the tracks play onto the next….follow up on “sounds like”….see who’s following, many artists follow other artists….

Artists on this playlist are Poulomi Desai (UK / India), _blank [also known by human alias: Blanca Rego] (Spain ), Marta Zapparoli (Italy / Germany), Lương Huệ Trinh (Viet Nam), Todas Las Anteriores (Mexico / USA ), Laughing Ears (China ), Ch. Webster (France ) and Yuko Araki(Japan).

As a final note, I was asked if I would continue to contribute 8Track playlists to TQ for both publication and online and agreed to do it. The playlists are primarily but not wholly electronic artists, as I listen to so much that doesn’t quite fit the genre. I do try and include as much as I can on Feminatronic but some things stretch the general criterias I work to. This is where creating my 8Track choices for TQ has been liberating, because there I can include these artists and sounds, although I am sticking with two general rules. Firstly, to focus on artists that create music who mostly, but not exclusively, just happen to identify as female. Secondly, my listening suggestions fit loosely into the NAU soundworld, although there may be some leeway with this, but I think it’s always good to expand your listening horizons.

A New Year….A New Start

For those of you who know me well and /or understand what this site is about, you will be aware that I believe in collaboration, support, and co-operation to try and shine a spotlight on those ‘electronic’ artists from many genres, who just happen to identify as female.

This is a personal journey that I began 6 years ago and increasingly have found that I cannot cover everything, especially as I am an artist myself and have my own projects to create and finish.

Feminatronic is on many platforms. Although I do not have a public contact link here ( for particular reasons), I am contactable via social media and it has been a pleasure to receive messages out of the blue from artists, labels and reviewers, as well as messages of support. I have made clear from the start it is not about me as an individual. The name suggests the subject and although centred around female identifying artists is NOT exclusive and / or divisive, which is against the ethos of the site and me personally.

By the methods of RT and reblogging (by means of the WordPress mechanisms), I have been able to make a small contribution to getting some focus on what is in fact only a tiny proportion of the many female artists, from all genres of electronic music, creating art out there. I am a tiny cog in the wheel of progress, which I have seen over the past years.

This site is a portal where you can click through to the original site / articles and I have had the honour to reblog many articles and reviews from respected writers via their own sites for many years. In doing this I discover and learn so much about a subject dear to my heart, find new artists and listen to their work, as well as enjoy reading the varied viewpoints and thoughts of writers.

The ultimate aim is to enable visitors to go on their own journey’s of discovery, like I have been doing these past years, as you never know what you will find and listen to from one day to the next. Hopefully, by doing this, lesser known artists also get some focus and maybe you will listen to more of their music and even buy it and thereby support artists in a concrete way.

I am not going to go into detail what sparked this post but it has given me a chance to take stock and maybe rethink how I may do things in the future. Watch this space.

What I do know is that I will be continuing here, at least for the present, in some way.

Thank you for reading this and supporting the concept of Feminatronic.

I wish you all the best for 2019, whoever and wherever you are.

Our cover image is taken from Peter Brown’s The Wild Robot, one of the finest YA books in recent memory.  A sequel, The Wild Robot Escapes, will be published next spring.  For more on Brown and the Wild Robot series, visit his website here.

Friday Focus – Fair_Play

Fair_Play 300

FAIR_PLAY is a network designed to promote the visibility to the practices of women, cis, trans and sociocultural minorities ignored by the mainstream visibility systems in the fields of sound art, experimental and alternative music and related arts.
The aim is to set up spaces for creation and fair representation through organising events, workshops and mentoring schemes, relaying calls for projects, and sharing tools for boosting visibility and the dissemination of information.
