REVIEW REBLOG – Björk: Vulnicura – Album Review

Lovely in-depth review courtesy of PonDeWayWayWay

When I hear the words “breakup album” I have to hold back a groan; the cathartic nature of such an experience helps some artists to create their best work but it leads just as many, if not more, to deliver overwrought, cliché filled downers. So, when I was reading the news of  Vulnicura’s rush-release, my excitement was dampened somewhat by Björk’s own description of her latest album, her eighth and the first since 2011’s ambitious Biophilia project. However, as is almost always the case with the Icelandic auteur, things are rarely straightforward and never as expected. I should have known not to be worried, Vulnicura contains some of her most vulnerable and emotional work whilst ever continuing to innovate. As a result it may just be her best work since 2001’s Vespertine.

REVIEW REBLOG – Furchick – Cats in the bath (Dick Smith mix)

Finally catching up this New Year and this is a good place to start…

I don’t know about you but my New Years wish was to exchange the rubber ducks in the bath with real life cats. I managed to exchange them, but not fairly sure if it was a good idea to do so. In fact under the layer of soapy foam there is water with a reddish glow, a colored substance coming from all the cuts my new bathing cats palls have been giving me. Apparently they don’t really like bathing, or water to swim in in general; where are the rubber sucks when you need them the most?

1 hmm… in a swimming-pool?

But unexpected help was on its way to safe me from the angry bath-haters sharp nailed paws, as I stumbled upon a magical trick to make the cats (and myself) in a…

TODAYS DISCOVERY – Deemer / Dee Byrne

Dee Byrne

dee-wall

Dee Byrne composes for and leads ‘space-jazz’ group Entropi (debut album, New Era was released on the F-IRE Presents label in June 2015), is one half of experimental electronics/sound art duo Deemer (debut album, Interference Patterns was released on Luminous Label in December 2015), is involved in numerous collaborations including six piece improvising electro-acoustic ensemble Zonica, eight piece saxophone ensemble Saxoctopus (debut album released on Raw Tonk Records in July 2015) and Word of Moth (debut album to be released on Luminous label in 2016). Dee also plays with Xantone Blacq (Platinum Fingers/Whirlwind) and the Soul Immigrants (P-Vine records Japan). She is co-founder of the acclaimed original and improvised music platform LUME with Cath Roberts and is Project Manager for the National Youth Jazz Collective.

Deemer employ, among other things, alto saxophone, drums, analogue electronics, tape, transducer microphones/speakers to instantly compose, activate space, and blur the boundaries between free jazz and sound installation.

TODAYS DISCOVERY – Gato Preto

Since the focus this week is on Duo’s, it gives me a chance to post tracks and artists that do not easily fit into Feminatronic mould, so to speak, in a strict sense but there is some very interesting music being created by duo’s that I cannot miss out, Gato Preto is one such group.

What can I say? Best leave it to them –

Hard African Kuduro rhythms meet Punk guitars, Portuguese Raps and Electro Bleeps. Gato Preto are an energetic duo  with their roots in Ghana, Portugal and Mozambique.

SOUNDCLOUD PLAYLISTS

Feminatronic is on Soundcloud, linking with as many artists from around the world, creating electronic music from as many genres as possible. Every Monday, I put together a playlist of usually 8 tracks, around a general theme and this week the focus is on Duo’s. Whatever your musical interests, there’s bound to be something  waiting to be discovered.

ARTICLE REBLOG – Reflections on music technology & gender

This is how it should work.
Set up a tiny website about an important issue and eventually one or two people like what you are doing and follow you. I visit their blogs and discover sites , articles and organisations of interest to me (and hopefully others). New connections and getting the voices heard to a wider audience. Here is my Discovery Today – Attack / Decay website. Will be posting more in the future : ))

An early morning cup of tea with a couple of my female co-workers – one of whom is a trained sound engineer – ended up turning into a deep and lengthy discussion about the gender politics of the music industry; specifically why women tend to be under-represented in the world of electronic music production and technology. It’s a question I’ve been reflecting on lately, (in the gaps between writing posts), noticing the patterns within my own writing, and the dominance of men in many of the events I write about.

.

The proliferation of relatively cheap music production software, as well as the ease of distributing music through online platforms, should represent a democratisation of music-making. The days of requiring large amounts of expensive analogue equipment and access to studios to produce an album are long gone. With even the most rudimentary studio set up, it is now possible…

REVIEW REBLOG – p0stm0rtem – NIPPOP

Finally posted this review : D
Many thanks to Yeah I Know it Sucks.

Artist: p0stm0rtem
title: NIPPOP
keywords: experimental,japan,abstract,ambient,avantgarde,pop, electronic,improvised, korea,leftfield, Toronto
reviewer: Willem van O.

Music can be anything, and everything. Sometimes it might be even so much everything and anything that it turns into a complete thing of its own. This is a way to describe the music captured on this release here by p0stm0rtem. You probably had heard of her as some of the reviewers out here tipped this artist as the potential winner of artist of the year. but as they are all a biased bunch, I wanted to check it out with my own honest ears. hope you will stay with me and appreciate this rare effort.

my notes on the first track are barely a couple of scribbles, but yet enough to knit a few sentences from. the abstract electronic experimental music has something minimal to it, but more importantly it gave me (according to my note…

REVIEW REBLOG – Lisa Busby ~ Fingers in the Gloss

Courtesy to A Closer Listen for the review reblog.

postrockcafe's avatara closer listen

multicolor coversIf you sleep in an oyster long enough, you become a pearl.  And this is exactly what happened to Lisa Busby, who is “not the same woman.”  But fear not!  Shards of the old Lisa remain.  She’s still calcium carbonate under all that shimmer.  We never forget our roots.

Long-time readers already know the reference.  Sleeps in Oysters was one of our favorite musical duos of the last decade.  Don’t you worry, John fans ~ he’s swimming languorously in The Lumen Lake, while Lisa’s been floating on the good ship Rutger Hauser. She is not an excessive girl.  This is how we know they still get along.  Now that summer’s over, Lisa’s been hanging out in bakeries and mortuaries, recording beautifully non-linear music.  No A-A-B-A here.  More like X-Z-Q-Q.  Everybody knows those are the coolest letters.

riso happy!By virtue of her music, Lisa scores a non-linear review.  Follow…
