TODAYS DISCOVERY -Diane Thome

There was a bit of a buzz on Twitter today about a list compiled on RYM website covering women in electroacoustic, minimalism, tape music, musique concrète, free improvisation, and related genres  which I highly recommend.

This is a brilliant work in progress and although there are many artists I know there are many that I do not. Never missing a chance to discover new music I began to look through and just followed the links.

In doing so, I came across Todays Discovery – Diane Thome.

Here is a wonderful collaboration she did with Robert Austin. He states on the Soundcloud page –

This is a collaboration with my longtime collaborator, Seattle composer Diane Thome. I designed sounds for her (usually hundreds), from which she selected a subset, and arranged the samples into an audio collage, typically 8-16 tracks. I would then nip, tuck, re-synthesize, adjust dynamics and panning etc. We would pass it back and forth until we both agreed that it was ‘done’. I would sometimes write sections for pieces myself, and the goal was to produce a computer-synthesized tape which could stand on its own, though typically a solo instrument would play together with the tape. “Estuaries” was scored for oboe and computer synthesized sound, and here is the latter.

REVIEW REBLOG – Julia Kent ~ Asperities

I have loved the music of Julia Kent for some time and many may wonder why I would repost her here or have her on an artist page. Simply there has always been a movement in Classical music who have embraced electronic methods and processes to create an overall sound and track. This is an area that I will return to in the future and hey, what the heck – not purely electronic but beautiful.

AsperitiesAsperities is as close to commercial as one can get in modern composition without compromise.  Accessible yet deep, Julia Kent‘s cello-based music provides an entry point to those who might not otherwise have considered listening to instrumental music.  Her new album offers a mix of pensive, emotional tunes and the stringed equivalent of bangers.  Credit her background in Rasputina and Antony & the Johnsons for the knowledge of how to walk the line.

Even apart from the music, Kent’s presentation exposes the workings of a complex and mature mind.  The cover seems to indicate two personalities cleaving together, or the resolution of duality.  The press release describes the album as “the layers of sound peeling back to reveal a beating, bloody human heart.”  Contrast this with the majority of releases in the genre, which bend over backwards to be polite.  As Kent puts it, “it seems like a particularly dark…

In the Light of AirLess than a month after Anna Thorvaldsdottír’s inclusion on Nordic Affect’s Clockworking, a new collection of her work has been issued.  This four-movement work (plus a concluding piece) premiered only a year ago, and is performed by the International Contemporary Ensemble.  At the 2014 Reykjavik Arts Festival, a series of breath-activated lights enhanced the experience, while many klakabönd (metallic ornaments known as a bind of ice) were used as percussion.  Much of this is apparent in the clip below, but home listeners might imitate the experience through creative lighting and sound-and-motion activated appliances.

Not that any of this is necessary to enjoy the album, a combination of filigree-thin solos and remarkable convergences.  Thorvaldsdottír honors both the contributions of the individual performers and their work as an ensemble.  At this point, fifteen years and five hundred premieres into their career, ICE’s resume is so long that it causes the…

HEADPHONE COMMUTE – Strië – Struktura (Serein)

I have posted previous reviews of the music of Strie but reading this review has led me to some great sonic discoveries which I will highlight .

Strië - StrukturaIden Reinhart first appeared on the scene back in 2010, with her Sléptis debut on Soundscaping Records. I finally got a chance to properly cover Reinhart’s second release as Strië on Time Released Sounds back in 2012, and Õhtul was featured on Headphone Commute’s Best of 2012 list, Music For The Frosty Night When I Miss Your Warm Light. The third proper album from this somewhat mysterious artist is released courtesy of Serein records, and this time I must take a moment to allow the curtain of shadowy background remain, while I focus strictly on the music within.

The sound is immediately dear to my ears, with its lo-fi aesthetics, cinematic soundscapes, and noir-fi atmospheres. If the esoterically named hauntology style was indeed a real genre, Strië’s approach at production, composition, and sonic environment shall gain her a worldwide recognition among the purveyors of these moods.
