Shadow of a Shadow by Cyanching
By TJ Norris – Toneshift – August 10, 2019

Cyanching | Shadow of a ShadowBezirk Tapes (CS/DL) From London-based Taiwanese composer Cyanching comes an ear-catching debut. Her work, at least at first, comes off subtle with a shroud of harmony slowly emerging from a quiet space. Perhaps Shadow of a Shadow is the sonoric equivalent to mise en abîme, as it transmits what sound […]

” “I try to redefine sampling,” she explains. “If I like a sound, I don’t just record it, I try to recreate it. If I love a bassline on a track for example, I try to play it myself and capture the qualities that attract me. By doing that you create a new sound within an old pattern.”

Reblog – Teresa Rampazzi’s voice and her unique piece “Taras” — laura zattra

Curious to hear what Teresa Rampazzi’s (1914-2001) voice sounded like? This is a unique opportunity. This audio track I’ve uploaded on SoundCloud is part of a radio programme aired in 1985 “Le nuove frontiere della musica” (New frontiers of music; director: Tonino Delfino). Rampazzi and Delfino are discussing her piece “Taras su tre dimensioni”. The […]

#Rolemodels – Lena Platonos

Lena Platonos is a Greek musician, pianist and composer and pioneer of Greek electronic and art music. She took a leading role in the electronic music scene in the 1980s, while her work constituted an inspiration for Greek electronic musicians in the subsequent decades. (Wikipedia)

Lena Platonos and the secret sound of Greek electronica

Thanks to reissues by labels like Dark Entries and Into The Light Records, this electronic pioneer is reaching new audiences. Sarah Souli tells her story.

Wonderful overview here on Resident Advisor

Released in 1984, ‘Μάσκες Ηλίου’ (‘Sun Masks’) was Lena Platonos’ first record to feature her own words and vocals… “I began to reverse my thought process, to let melodies fade out, to turn to minimalism, to experiment on my Yamaha C60 synthesizer and a variety of “boxes” which I used to change the sound of my voice as well as the sound of the synthesizer” says Lena. The album featured experiments with different sounds and a new batch of electronic equipment, such as the legendary Roland TR 808 drum machine.

Lena Platonos – Shadow Of Blood

The album is made exclusively using analog synthesizers and heavily features the iconic Roland TR-808 drum machine. Lena narrates each song, reciting her own surreal Greek poetry with unique skill.

Sound Propositions 016: Félicia Atkinson — a closer listen

It is an honor to present this extended conversation with Félicia Atkinson, whose latest record, The Flower and The Vessel, has just been released on Shelter Press. Electronic, dance, experimental,

I don’t want to sound cliched so here’s a good description –

” Berlin-based Chinese producer RUI HO makes electronic music that bridges modern club influences with traditional Chinese sounds.”

#Rolemodels – Suzanne Doucet

There seems to be an resurgence of interest in new age music created in the 70’s and 80’s and to me, on further listening in 2019, it doesn’t really differ from many of the “new” genres in electronic music and artists that are around now.

New Age music has had a bad press over the years but don’t dismiss it offhand. There are musicians who need to have a greater recognition for their creativity despite the tag New Age and Suzanne Doucet is a pioneer of New Age and is definitely a rolemodel.

SuzanneDoucet

“New Age Music is the music of the new millennium. We are all pioneers, our work is on the vibrational level, which is the essence of all being. Our inner environment and the outer environment are co-dependent. This is the reason why music is so important for our lives. Whatever I can do to bring consciousness expanding music to as many people as possible, I’ll do… and I’ll devote my total being to whatever I am doing!”

Manja Ristić ~ The Black Isle — a closer listen

“My childhood was deep blue and foamy,” writes Serbian composer Manja Ristić. Her memories of Korčula Island are pristine. As she recalls the town streets “positioned in the shape of a fish bone,” and the “natural air conditioning of the Adriatic winds,” one can imagine long, carefree days and nights spent by the sea. But when […]

“In her changed environment, despite sonic pollution, she is still able to find an oasis.” (Richard Allen)

Maybe it’s because I recognise the methods in creating The Black Isle, this is a release that I loved from first listening. Thanks to A Closer Listen it would have otherwise escaped me.
