Review Reblog – Andie Brown & Sharon Gal – Mami Wata

“Mami Wata is the debut recording of the duo of Andie Brown, the ex-Cindytalk bassist now working primarily with glass and electronics, and ‘vocal experimentalist’ Sharon Gal, who also plays electronics and recordings. It’s the latest CD-R release on French micro-label Wild Silence……” – Dalston Sound

Review Reblog – Tattered Kaylor ~ Sombre nay Sated

This week’s playlist #102 is Artist Alphabet letter E and it gives me a good reason to catch up and discover new artists. This lead me to this older review from ACL regarding the sound artist Tessa Elieff / Tattered Kaylor.

postrockcafe's avatara closer listen

cover_1000Australian sound artist Tessa Elieff (Tattered Kaylor) has created and curated many workshops, festivals and sound installations over the past few years, but her recorded discography (including last year’s debut album Selected Realities) is expanding her reach to a global audience.  Sombre nay Sated, released on World Listening Day (July 18), gives listeners a metaphorical window into the rooms of some recent installations.

Elieff’s fascination with perception as it pertains to “sonic realities” was put to the test on this recording, as none of the three pieces were meant to be confined to the studio.  As frequent visitors to performances and installations can attest, depth, space and movement are key factors.  In many cases, a sound cast in one room is meant to be echoed in another.  How then does one translate such an environment to a stereo experience – one that will itself be…

Review Reblog – Agnès Pe – Tremble Passion

Artist: Agnès Pe
Title: Tremble Passion
Keywords: devotional experimental radiohead source extreme sound forum data shit madrigals midines tremble soundLleida

Agnès Pe is back and this time she brought some trembling-worthy music experiments with her. I can’t report on them all as that would not only be considered ‘spoilers’ to everyone who enjoys exploring the newest Agnès Pe release without pre-knowledge of what to expect & how things will sound like BUT still have some things to write about the things that are important: for example how it starts!

The start is always important as it lures people in, wether it’s a cinema experience or in this case a audio-kind of entertainment. The story with this brand new release sets a clear setting of ambient & electric shaving. The right word might be a electric hair trimmer with ambience included. Everyone might be able to get a haircut by scissors…

Review Reblog – Nomadic Female DJ Troupe ~ Mix One

postrockcafe's avatara closer listen

We’re going on a picnic, yay!  Do we have everything?  Walkman?  Check.  Amplifiers?  Check.  Microphone?  Check.  Circuit board?  Check.  Turntable?  Check.  Wires?  Check.  Okay, looks like we’re set!  *walking, walking, walking*  Hey Francine, this looks like a great spot!  *unpacking*  Click, click, hum, hum, buzz, buzz.  I’m hungry!  Ruthie, did you bring sandwiches?  “…”  Uh oh.  Lisa?  A water bottle?  Anything?  “…”

The women of Nomadic Female DJ Troupe risked everything to bring us creative music: starvation, dehydration, public fine.  To the regular visitors of the park, they are strange women making strange music.  This is not Chicago’s “Saturday in the Park” or The Doobie Brothers’ “Another Park, Another Sunday”.  There is singing, albeit warped, mangled and distorted.  Although Lisa loves karaoke, few would recognize this as song.  Tapes are rewound and abused.  The needle drops and is snatched away.  What in the world is going on?

Separately, the…

Wanted to take a moment to thank those of our readers who lent their signatures to the petition to help Laetitia (Ars Sonor, iky iky) keep from being deported to Russia — something that would be a veritable death sentence, and surely is an institutionalized hate crime. For those of you haven’t had the chance to sign yet, that link will take you to the petition. The fight is not over, so I’m intending to write more reviews of Laetitia’s work…

Review Reblog – Anne-F Jacques

“Anne-F Jacques creates microscopic worlds of whirring machines, steampunk flea circuses of motorized sonics birthed from her collection of mechanical discs and wheels (‘rotating surfaces’), meticulously calibrated and often adjusted with weights or blocks to interfere with their natural balance…”

Review Reblog – Ashley Bellouin – Ballads

The focus for a couple of weeks is on all platforms is  Artists whose surnames begin with B, so this fits perfectly and recommend a listen.

everydayambient's avatarEveryday Ambient

Today’s featured album is an LP of drone compositions by a young avant-garde composer. This is Ms. Bellouin’s second LP overall and first for Drawing Room. The instruments played on this LP are as follows: harmonium, glass armonica, aluminum rods, electronics, electric guitar, and cello.

Side A of the LP begins with a looping drone that gradually gets louder. A bubbling melody comes in, and low, gritty, string-like tones emerge that evolve into a feeling of warmth and tranquility. Small shimmers of melody are added to the mix along with some ringing, chiming tones. As the track progresses, the low tones fade back and forth to the foreground and background. There is some repetitive bleeping, some use of volume, bright melody, and a good deal of texture.

Side B of the LP is much more ominous and uneasy. A high-pitched tone starts this track and moves into a low drone…
