Shadow of a Shadow by Cyanching
By TJ Norris – Toneshift – August 10, 2019

Cyanching | Shadow of a ShadowBezirk Tapes (CS/DL) From London-based Taiwanese composer Cyanching comes an ear-catching debut. Her work, at least at first, comes off subtle with a shroud of harmony slowly emerging from a quiet space. Perhaps Shadow of a Shadow is the sonoric equivalent to mise en abîme, as it transmits what sound […]

” “I try to redefine sampling,” she explains. “If I like a sound, I don’t just record it, I try to recreate it. If I love a bassline on a track for example, I try to play it myself and capture the qualities that attract me. By doing that you create a new sound within an old pattern.”

Lena Platonos and the secret sound of Greek electronica

Thanks to reissues by labels like Dark Entries and Into The Light Records, this electronic pioneer is reaching new audiences. Sarah Souli tells her story.

Wonderful overview here on Resident Advisor

Released in 1984, ‘Μάσκες Ηλίου’ (‘Sun Masks’) was Lena Platonos’ first record to feature her own words and vocals… “I began to reverse my thought process, to let melodies fade out, to turn to minimalism, to experiment on my Yamaha C60 synthesizer and a variety of “boxes” which I used to change the sound of my voice as well as the sound of the synthesizer” says Lena. The album featured experiments with different sounds and a new batch of electronic equipment, such as the legendary Roland TR 808 drum machine.

The album is made exclusively using analog synthesizers and heavily features the iconic Roland TR-808 drum machine. Lena narrates each song, reciting her own surreal Greek poetry with unique skill.

” Berlin-based Chinese producer RUI HO makes electronic music that bridges modern club influences with traditional Chinese sounds.”

Manja Ristić ~ The Black Isle — a closer listen

“My childhood was deep blue and foamy,” writes Serbian composer Manja Ristić. Her memories of Korčula Island are pristine. As she recalls the town streets “positioned in the shape of a fish bone,” and the “natural air conditioning of the Adriatic winds,” one can imagine long, carefree days and nights spent by the sea. But when […]

“In her changed environment, despite sonic pollution, she is still able to find an oasis.” (Richard Allen)

Maybe it’s because I recognise the methods in creating The Black Isle, this is a release that I loved from first listening. Thanks to A Closer Listen it would have otherwise escaped me.

Reblog – Interview with Kate Carr —

Lovely long interview here….

This piece explores sonic transmissions and emissions, radio, morse code, sonar, satellite, blue tooth, and wireless. From our efforts to track and transmit into our solar system using radio, to blue tooth connections across the room, this work examines the ephemeral sonic tools we use and the traces these leave as we attempt to reach each other. It is an ode to the fragility, dynamism and determination encapsulated in the ways we attempt to connect.

Contact is an edited version of a live performance at Radiophrenia Festival in Glasgow on May 15, 2019.

Here are a couple of releases that really caught my ear when on a journey into sound art.

Obviously this influential piece …

by Annea Lockwood

Experimental, chants, folk, meditation, traditional…and cat purring

“Each piece is concerned with evoking a force-sound, making this force/energy materialize and become quite clear to all there. The players then can’t just simply ‘learn to play’ my pieces, They’ll find themselves going through a training course to discover what is meant by sounds and their energy. To discover how to transcend through themselves. To learn the fine edge of sound as a destructive or misapplied force (un-perceived tone perhaps) and sound as transformer or as something wholeness making.”

Secondly this beautiful strangeness to the ear which is on my Christmas list –
