Review Reblog – Bana Haffar ~ Matiere

All manner of gorgeous tracks occupy Bana Haffar‘s Soundcloud page, many unreleased. The Los Angeles artist has been swiftly building her sonic resume over the past two years, and Matiere is her latest public declaration. This follow-up to last year’s Alif 12″ sees her continue to expand the length of her tracks into something resembling mini-sets; “Endo” and “Exo” are dual movements of the same work, at eighteen total minutes a light yet satisfying two course meal.

Much of Haffar’s work is with patches (see photo), but she keeps the shifts to a minimum here, preferring to approach the movements in different manners rather than to alter their base sound. As “Endo” begins, it sounds like the tuning of a bass guitar, demonstrating the range of the Make Noise modular synthesizer. One knows a song is going to break out; one simply doesn’t know when. Moving beyond any high or low fidelity, the nature of the sounds blend together into a space where compression artefacts, phone mic’ing and high-tech sound design mingle fluently. From weeping wind harps to whispered confessionals to immense trance reveries, the result is a sound that eludes itself and forces the ear to expect some curious inversion around every corner.”

I came across Agnes Pe via Yeah I Know it Sucks some time ago and have followed her avant garde, witty and experimental work ever since.

It doesn’t happen everyday when two intriguing artists collaborate in a audio visual form, but when the odd moons align and such a special thing actually happens it’s for sure something to inform everyone about! Especially when the artists in question are ‪Agnès Pe & Jan Strach. The result is a spectacular experience in the shape of a excellent trip in music video form. Jan Strach heard ‘Para Ana’ by Agnès Pe and must have been incredibly inspired as the good man started to create the perfect visuals to the sounds. ‬

‪With his love for video games and the excellent trained ears for the bizarreness in the music spectrum, Jan Strach managed to make the track come alive. It’s a real trip, one that is best viewed…

Travel the world through mini sound postcards….

” Sound Map is an audio project by artists Hannah Kemp-Welch and Lisa Hall, first shown at Tate Modern during Uniqlo Tate Late, June 30th 2017.

Responding to Cildo Meireles’s sonic vision of the Tower of Babel, we invite participants to listen to the most widely spoken languages across the globe, and reconsider the world map by language and listening, rather than country. This series of audio works form sonic postcards — snapshots of each language.
Collecting speech and song from online radio stations, news channels and live web cams, we’ve sought to capture each language in a two-minute mix. The audio was gathered at midday in the respective locations to ensure a chance selection process, free from bias. Where needed, environmental sounds were also sourced from online databases.”

I was lucky enough to see Jane Weaver when she toured her last release The Silver Globe and bathed in the sonic psychedelic synths, a sound that resonates with the past but is still of today and melodic too, which is an art in itself : )
