We all have some idea of what the words “shamanistic” and “ritual” mean in the context of music, and in general they’re associated to clear-cut rhythms and repetitive structures thanks to certain historical connections with the African diaspora. But Angelina Yershova comes from a context where those words translate into practices different from those ecstatic meditations many of us have come to identify as ritualistic. CosmoTengri is a collage of “cosmos” and “Tengri”, which is the ancient Turkic/Mongolian word for a deity, the “Blue Eternal Heaven”. As if the sky wasn’t enough, the fusion of the words has a universal aim, emphasizing the sheer vastness of a world that the self-mythologization of reason has endeavored to expropriate, to take all it can without ever giving back. Her love of music began at an early age, initially through her mother’s CD collection of 80’s and 90’s R&B divas. She was raised in the Catholic Church and was soon a regular in the choir. Like a sweet offering of incense, Ana’s sublime voice rises up.

For Ana, singing is a lifelong passion. She began studying jazz and classical music, which led to her touring and performing in old cathedrals, whose lofty arches promote the ascension of tones, and where deep quietude only helps to heighten the power of the music. Okay, we have to talk. Or no, let me refrain this; I have to pen up and you just read and accept it for what it is: a little praise for a fantastic album. Yes, you have read it well; a fantastic album. It’s done and created by a artist named Sabiwa who order us not to make any sound ourself and instead listen to her big banging beats, mythologically impressive sounds and futuristic ambiences. She is right, first of all because it sounds so massive that your own sounds would just fade away into nothing, but second of all; it’s just to impressive to be chatted through.

All these goodies on this album seem to be smeared into each other, like good ideas that had become real things in reality. Odd…

A stalwart of the microsound scene, France Jobin releases her 9th album on the No. label. Despite her previous association with the most lowercase of sounds, this album sees the Montreal-based artist expand her sound palette considerably. These tracks are noticeably fuller in scale and scope, allowing Jobin to explore wider realms of audio. Of course, her signature sine waves are present in many places here, delicate shards and pings of treble and hiss, but overall this collection embraces a warmer, richer aesthetic and it pays off.

Track titles are mysterious, possibly relating to quantum entanglement, as this heady area of theoretical physics was influential in the construction of Intrication. The first piece, “Ph”, is an epic 15-minute track that begins proceedings in style. Glitched-out half-melodies stutter from speaker to speaker, with high pitched crackles following along the periphery. Thicker…
