Fractured Air 39: Call Across Rooms (A Mixtape by Julianna Barwick)

Courtesy to Fractured Air. Well worth checking out the other varied mixtapes in the collection.

The Brooklyn-based composer Julianna Barwick has firmly established herself as truly one of the most wholly unique artists making music today. Barwick has released three LPs to date: ‘Sanguine’, her 2006 self-released debut full length; ‘The Magic Place’ (Asthmatic Kitty, 2011) and ‘Nepenthe’ (Dead Oceans, 2013). Barwick has also recorded as a duo (alongside fellow Asthmatic Kitty artist Helado Negro) under the OMBRE guise; the stunning collaboration has thus far resulted in debut LP ‘Believe You Me’ (Asthmatic Kitty, 2012). Born in Louisianna and raised in Missouri, Barwick’s love for music stemmed from her participation in school choirs during her formative years. Current LP ‘Nepenthe’ (in Greek literature ‘nepenthe’ was a magic drug to wipe out grief and sorrow) was recorded in Reykjavík and features contributions from some of Iceland’s most treasured artists (Amiina, múm guitarist Robert Reynisson and producer Alex Somers).

The colour of sound: orange

Courtesy to Sounds Like Noise for this interesting series.

orange

A short sample from the colour of sound: orange

To listen to the full version go to the Radio National Soundproof program.

Orange is the next colour to feature on the ABC Radio National series on colour and sound. In this episode we follow the story of Bainbridge Bishop who believed that sound could best be heard where two colours meet, that sonic energy vibrates between the shades of one colour to the next.

His inspiration?

Rainbows.

Bishop describes the orange seen at twilight, a soft warm colour. It is this description that set the tone for this latest instalment in the Colour of Sound series.

I was happy to get the talented Australian actress Belinda McClory to read for this episode. Belinda might be familiar to you as the character Switch in The Matrix.

Only two more colours to go in the series, Indigo and Violet. I hope…

Final Sound Installation – Hayley Wanless

I have enjoyed reading about the process of creating Sound Art work from the point of view of a new artist – discovering the processes involved both practical and creatively.

Hayley Wanless's avatarHayley Wanless

Working within a space with 6 speakers has allowed me to find what works best with the space and equipment. Without access to this facility I believe my work would have suffered. The space allowed me to create the spacial effect that I wish to have when installing my work.

I have used Trial 8 and created a tempo fade up and down. The piece is split into 3 parts which all run after one another. The first is Trial 8 without any background noise. The Second is Trial 8 with Rain at Night Gamma background noise and the Third is Trial 8 with Bus Journey Theta background noise. I chose Rain at Night and Bus Journey because of their relation to solitude even if we are surrounded by sounds or people. We generally listen to sounds around us when we are alone, we listen to peoples conversations when we…

W00DY ~ RNBW

Thanks to A Closer Listen for another great find and this is todays discovery.

postrockcafe's avatara closer listen

WoodyRNBWAs colorful as the rainbow of the title, RNBW is a joyous clash of genres: dance, drone, ethereal, industrial, and even noise.  Refreshingly original, this debut full-length does much to reflect its inspiration: “the full spectrum of who we are.”

Modern associations one may make when considering the album are likely incorrect.  According to Catherine Woodcock, the moniker started as a nickname, then mutated into a meld of alphabet and binary language: “it is not necessarily male or female, which is very freeing.”  This RNBW hearkens back to a 70s metaphor for the rainbow, having less to do with gender and/or sexuality and more with pure expression.

“Never hesitate to be who you are,” sings W00DY on “Never Hesitate”, one of the album’s key tracks.  Her voice is stuttered and echoes into a vast drone, which subsequently gives way to bass, beat and squelch, reminiscent of the dub/trip-hop blends of…

Interview with Mica Levi

Here is Mica Levi talking to Headphone Commute about, amongst other things, the humanness in music and to prove it here is her remix of Bjork – Lionsong

HC's avatarHeadphone Commute

Mica LeviMica Levi, known by her stage name Micachu is an English composer who has recently come into our spotlight with her amazing soundtrack for Under The Skin. If you’re anywhere around Los Angeles, be sure to catch Mica on January 6th (7:00pm and 10:00pm shows) for a live screening of Under The Skin with Mica and a 25-piece orchestra (Wild Up! Orchestra + Wordless Music Orchestra) at The Regent Theater.

Hi, Mica. How are you and where are you these days?
I’m good, thanks. I’m in London – hope you are well.

So this was your very first soundtrack, right? How different was the composition process from all of your past experience?
It was very different because it was very long and the music had to find its own pace and style or language to suit the film. Throwing everything you got at it – it eventually cuts…

Step Right Up: Poppy Ackroyd

Courtesy to Fractured Air for this in depth interview. Will be highlighting some other Denovali artists soon.

Interview with Poppy Ackroyd.

“The main crossover was thinking and listening to the sound I made on each instrument. Learning to take an interest in the composer and of course the music itself, thinking about the story and why the music was written, and then considering how best to express and perform it.”

—Poppy Ackroyd

Words: Mark Carry

poppy-ackroyd

Poppy Ackroyd is a composer from London, currently based in Brighton. Classically trained on violin and piano, she makes music by manipulating and multi-tracking sounds from just these two instruments. Her debut ‘Escapement’ was released in December 2012 by Denovali Records and a DVD – ‘Escapement Visualised’ – featuring bespoke visuals by Lumen for each track on the album, was released in September 2014.

Feathers’, her second album, was released in November 2014, and builds on the concept behind her debut, with most of the sounds again…
